Recurring Dream
Occasionally, I have this dream in which I discover I somehow never graduated from high school, and have to go back to redo my senior year. To be clear, this doesn’t mean I travel back in time to re-finish things in ‘96. This is in the present.
And then it becomes one of those “no one could possibly be this stupid” dreams.
Here’s how the first day goes:
I get to school.
I’m wearing furry slippers.
I am assigned a locker and jam my blanket, robe, and towel inside. I am fascinated by another locker that has been left open; inside, there is a pair of size 18 hiking shoes.
Time for class! The hallways clear. Umm, I have no idea what my schedule is. I think maybe I have gym, and curse myself for wearing furry slippers to school rather than athletic shoes.
But wait. Maybe I have math. Oh, I don’t have any books, either. Must have left them at home.
So I go to the office to ask if I can go home. I explain that I haven’t been to high school in many years and seem to have forgotten how to not be an idiot. They’re all, “That’s cool.”
I hop in the MINI and head home.
Things get sorta fuzzy here, but I think I manage to get some proper shoes while at home. I get back to the school and realize I still don’t have any books.
Oh, and I’ve forgotten the combination for my locker, just as I’ve done in every single dream I’ve ever had about being in school. Every single time.
Fed up, I go to the office again and ask them to explain to me how I never managed to graduate. I tell them I’m almost certain I was given a diploma at some point, and…
The end.
